7. Commander read three thank you letters received from BS/GS participants. All positive, enjoyed the experience.

Unfinished Business

a) Correspondence: Correspondence relayed by the Commander.
  b) Mission of Honor - $200 donation approved by members, to go through county.
  c) Vice Cmdr reviewed County Cmdrs Membership contest. Cash prize awards for top three posts with new members.
  d) Post 526 provided County Post Desktop flag, Pole top Eagle for flag and Leather harnesses for flag. Total cost $89.95
  e) Post to get our flag harnesses repaired. To be done by Member- Bruce Powell
  f) Fund raiser to be scheduled at Di Paolo's Red Lion Inn (Scheduled for Thursday November1st)
  g) Bruce Powell - discussed planning and working on a display at the VFW to acknowledge the upcoming 75 anniversary of D-Day landing. To be discuss with VFW in detail at a later date.
  h) Bruce Powell - Would like to coordinate having the 'Ryan Plane' do a fly over next July for the Carranza day event. We talked about landing at Flying 'W' and doing some kind of event there. More to come.

  b) Membership: 101 Active Members. Burlington county is 6th in state for membership. The post received check from State for PUFL members. New Members were welcomed: Dennis Lacy, Dennis Shehan, Kenneth Hartman.
The Post is always looking for new members. County is running a membership drive.
  c) Boys State and Girls State: Warren Herbst BS/GS solicitation letter has been proof read and commented on. Clarification was made asking $250 from sponsors for both Girls and Boys. ($230 Girls originally)  Question was asked about giving a plaque or letter to sponsors, specifically should that verbiage be in the letter?  Letter should contain verbiage stating any amount is appreciated.  It was mentioned letter could be stream lined, Mike Ryan volunteered to assist. Commander stated a need for a committee to be formed for interviewing BS/GS candidates. Commander asked all members to think of business’s that may sponsor candidates. Please pass him the information. Goal is for 35 – 40 business's. Vice Commander stated we can review who to send the letter to in Novembers meeting. Once the letter is completed, Commander will send out.
  d) Commander Hicks and Russel Thomas attended County’s meeting. Commander offered to replace their flag holder at $93. County was appreciative.
  e) Bruce Powell was not able to attend. He would like to coordinate having the 'Ryan Plane' do a fly over next July for the Carranza day event. We talked about landing at Flying 'W' and doing an event there. Discussion tabled until November’s meeting.
  f) Upcoming NJ State American legion meetings: 20th of November, 8th of December, 9th of February.
Upcoming conventions: State 13-15 June National 23-29 August

New Business

V. a) Correspondence: Correspondence relayed by the Commander. 
Phillip Wayne of the Edgewater Park Elks sent a invitation to attend a Veterans dinner November 16th 5pm-8pm. Veterans free, guest $10. Address: 315 Green st. Edgewater Park NJ
Adjutant relayed various contest and scholarship applications. Letters to be forwarded to post via email. (will be posted on the web site)
  b) Clarification about $200 donation approved by members at September’s meeting, to go to county
    c) Fundraiser scheduled at Di Paolo's Red Lion Inn Thursday November1st, 3pm-9pm. Will hold 50/50 raffle. All are encouraged to attend and bring a guest.
  d) Discounts Lowes, Home Depot and Evergreen dairy bar offers a 10% discount to veterans
  e) Reminder: Members were reminded they can apply for a $3,000 Federal tax break
  f) Holiday Event: Commander to check on dates for our Post Christmas party at the Medford country club.
  g) Please inform post:  It was reported that a local 24 year old vet passed away recently. Manish Karnik attended the service. All post members are asked to notify post of these unfortunate events, so we may show our support to the families.
  h) Future event possibilities: Vice Commander mentioned the possibility of having his brother who works with the VA in Philadelphia come speak to the post about veterans topics and issues including claims.
  i) Visitation school request: A fifth-grade teacher at Kirby’s Mill elementary is looking for a vet to come and share experiences with their class.
  j) November 17th the Burlington Masonic lodge will host a take a vet to lunch. Vets are free guest $20. NAS Lakehurst Commander to be the guest speaker.

1. Ed Hall is planning to contact schools to begin the BS/GS campaign.
2. Warren Herbst would like to expand the campaign and try to advertise to students directly. Examples would be posting letters in grocery stores, libraries, etc. Members are asked to post letters in their neighborhoods.
3. There was a discussion to speak with school board about BS/GS.
4. Post looking into possibility of advertising on social media platforms for BS/GS.

 New Business

 a) John Scannel brought to the attention of the post that where he works at the South Jersey airport there is a hall available for the post to use for social gatherings.
   b) Mannish brought to the attention of the post that at the Medford Arts Center on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month they host a therapeutic arts class for veterans.
   c) Undecided on a December meeting.

   Boys State and Girls State:
1. Ed Hall met with school counselors. Discussed additional recruiting efforts; received commitment from them to forward information flyer to all interested students.
2. Established initial deadline for applications - January 30th
3. We want to start interviews NLT February 1st.
4. Commander to complete sponsorship solicitation letter before next meeting. Goal is to e-mail to membership completed letter prior to January 15th meeting for review and comment. We want a final draft ready for distribution at the meeting.
5. Commander asked members to provide business contact information for any business to be solicited for a scholarship.

 New Business

a) Correspondence: Commander reviewed National commander previous membership program. The post will be paid $5 for any previous member that went inactive between 2014-2016 that renews their membership.
  b) Carried over from October -Bruce Powell - discussed planning and working on a display at the VFW to acknowledge the upcoming 75 anniversary of D-Day landing. To be discuss with VFW in detail at a later date.
  c) Carried over from October Bruce Powell - Would like to coordinate having the 'Ryan Plane' do a fly over next July for the Carranza day event. We talked about landing at Flying 'W' and doing some kind of event there. More to come. Have not seen Bruce since October to discuss further.
   d) Vice Cmdr - Rod M, to contact John Scannell; member - owner of Windwalker Aero Club. Trying to setup member family event for mid-February. Valentines affair?
  e) Next meeting to be held January15,  2019.
  VI. Good of the Legion: Commander discussed the merits of both the state and National conventions.

Mark Preston has requested uniforms and other memorabilia from the state. Bruce Powell will provide many displays. Attempting to get contributions to cover BBQ (Hot dogs, etc)
  2. Discussed sponsorship request from Somerset County VTHS for 'America Day' event. Denied, limited funds at this time. V Cmdr Melvin to inform them of decision.

1.   Girls State - 10 applicants, 6 alternates plus one late request from a student with Academy aspirations. Girls all enrolled and paid.

2.      2. Boys State - 7 applicants.  However, no applications have been submitted yet on line. Ed Hall is working with counselors and students to resolve.  Boys State monies due May 1st.

3.      3. BCIT has requested a formal invoice for the charges to cover their participants. 

      4. Cherokee has committed to pay $800 for their students.

New Business

a) Discussed the expectation that the post will host the county meeting in July. Details to follow.
  b) Leisuretowne Vets group is hosting a luncheon at Laurel Hall. Tuesday May 28th, day after Memorial day 11:00, $12 /per person. Tickets from Ken Hartman in advance.
  c) Mike Ryan - looking for a copy of the By-Laws. Needs for gaming license application. Also Taxes and P & L statements completed.
  d) Lenape ROTC Seniors awards; approved supporting two awards @ $30 each
  e) Southampton 175 Anniversary events upcoming in 2020, looking for support.
  f) Southampton Memorial Day Parade- requesting Color guard. May 18th to Install flags on street poles, would like assistance.
  g) We will hold family picnic at Bamboo Gardens in conjunction with Jr Mechanics. Details to follow.
  h) SAL - Fund raining goals for several projects. Approved $100 to support.
  i) Elections in June. Cmdr Hicks nominated VCmdr Melvin for Cmdr position. Russell - considering if he will stay on as treasurer.

Unfinished Business 1. We will hold our summer picnic in conjunction with the Southampton Junior Mechanics. It will be at the Bamboo Gardens in Southampton. It would be very helpful to RSVP through Cmdr Hicks by July 16th. The event is on July 21st from 2-5pm. Cost is $25 per person. Food menu to follow in separate e-mail via Cmdr Hicks.
  2. Cmdr Hicks will send out email on our participation at the Carranza Memorial event to be held July 13th.
  3. Cmdr Hicks reported the annual NJ convention in Wild Wood went very well and the turn out was good.

  Correspondence: 1. Mayor of Southampton sent the Post a Thankyou letter for our participation in the Memorial Day events. *noted it was the 140th consecutive parade.
  2. Adjutant Baker sent a memo urging support for the “Pay Our Coast Guard Act” introduced to the Senate on 1/3/19.
This bill provides continuing appropriations to the U.S. Coast Guard for any period during which interim or full-year appropriations for the Coast Guard are not in effect.
The appropriations are provided to the Coast Guard for pay and allowances for members of the Coast Guard, civilian employees, and contractors;
the payment of a death gratuity, funeral travel, and the temporary continuation of the basic allowance for housing for dependents of members of the Coast Guard dying on active duty; and retired pay.
  3. Adjutant Baker sent a memo pertaining a rebuttal letter written by a OEF/OIF veteran. The theme of the rebuttal letter was that our organization is still relevant and going the right direction with younger veterans. (letter attached)

a) Commander Hicks reported the following; Navy Fireman 3rd Class Harold K. Costill, 18, of Clayton, New Jersey, killed during World War II, was accounted for on April 16, 2019. The following link will take you to his story.

  b) Discussion followed on need to have certificates of appreciation sent to BS/ GS Sponsors. It was noted that Warren Herbst does have templates made, but needed a list of sponsors. Further discussion on what style of writing to use, whether to designate BS or GS and who would receive them (i.e Evesham)

  c) D-Day 75th Anniversary. VFW Post 7677 and AL Post 526 hosted joint Historical presentation June 8 -9. It was commented that, although the turnout was not as big as we all would have liked the feedback was it was a success. Bravo Zulu Bruce Powell, Mark Preston and all those who helped!
  d) Post 526 elections were held. Vice Commander Melvin was nominated and elected Post Commander. Commander Hicks was nominated and elected Vice Commander. All other positions to remain the same.
  e) Bruce Powell mentioned that on Mondays at Johnson farms, Military ID card holders and their family can enjoy a free hayride. Courtesy of the Johnson’s.
  f) Congressman Kim’s office reached out to Cmdr Melvin and stated he is interested in visiting our post in the fall. Cmdr Melvin to follow up.
  g) Cmdr Melvin wanted post to think about the Christmas party and a social event at Aero Club. Noted that it will be September before we all meet again and that will be the time to start booking a event.
