Induction of D. Kosick as Adjutant

  Membership: Burlington County leads the state in post membership. The post received a plaque for 115% membership goals.
  Boys and Girls state: Four girls and 15 boys attended. One of the four girls became the Lieutenant Governor. Two participants backed out, would like to explore solutions to have the children and parents take more ownership in the commitment. It cost $250 per child.

Correspondence: Received thank you letters from Post #11 for help in the Carranza Memorial Service and Miss Stiehl (girls State participant).

  Tom MacArthur WWII Veterans ceremony here on Friday, October 14th at 1300; six WWII members; invitations and transportation. Representative MacArthur will also look for feedback from veterans in attendance.
 

BCEC ($57.00 of our Post dues is sent to the Burlington County Executive committee.) Commander Herbst mentioned the following projects:

State Commander’s Project - Lyons, Veterans Haven North and South for transitioning veterans. How much would we like to contribute?
County Commander’s Project - Mission of Honor – identify and inter orphaned and abandoned cremains of American Veterans. How much would we like to contribute?
Commander’s Dinner this year will be held next Spring on March 11th at Charlie’s Other Brother

Next BCEC meeting will be at Post #146 on October 10th at 7PM.

  Poster and Oratorical contests: Commander Herbst brought attention to raise awareness for upcoming oratorical and coloring contest’s. Post 526 will solicit the local high schools to see if we have any candidates interested in the Oratorical contest. The Oratorical judging will be in January and Poster in February
  On October 14th there is an Eagle Scout ceremony in Marlton
  Boys State Orientation will be held on May 1st in 2017
  The 100th Anniversary  Legion Coin  is available for order;  if we buy as a group through BCEC we can save on shipping.
  American Legion 100th Anniversary NJ License Plate is available for $15
  The Burlington Masonic Lodge is hosting a "Take a Veteran to Lunch" event on Saturday November 12, 2016 at 12 noon.  The cost is $20 a ticket.
  We voted to support Southampton Township School District’s employee of the month award program. We will sponsor one month at $50 a school year.
  Discussion of Post Activities for 2016-2017.  Discussed were two upcoming Post event’s, the Christmas party at Medford Country Club, and the picnic at Bamboo Gardens. Post members enjoyed the comradery of both events and wanted to see them continue.
  Mark Preston brought the following items to the Post’s attention:
There will be a Homeless Vets stand down in Cherry Hill this Friday (9/23).
Pig Roast @ Medford VFW Saturday the 24th.
Free advertisement in the Pine Barrens Tribune newspaper.
If members knew of an organization interested a free pool table he knew a generous donor who was offering one.
  Next Meeting:  The next meeting will be October 18, 2016.

 Unfinished Business  Membership: Our post is in second place behind Post 11 with 82.6%. Post 526 SAL was listed erroneously at 0% in the BCEC.
  Event: October 14-12 WWII Veterans attended the ceremony hosted by Congressman Tom Mac Arthur held at Medford’s VFW hall.
  Social: Our Christmas dinner will be held at the Medford Country Club. Thursday December 22nd 2016 @ 1830-2300. $30 per person. Menu: Blueberry Loaf, Ceaser salad, Prime Turkey, Chicken Francaise, Penne ala Vodka, Tilapia with sun dried tomatoes, caper, and lemon white wine sauce, Julienne of Vegetable, Sliced Marinated Potatoes, Brownie ala Mode, Coffee/Tea/Decaf/Soft Drinks

New business Welcome to our newest member Steven Patras.
  Boys State and Girls State for 2017 will be the week of the 18-23 June. Cost is $250.00, applications are online. There will be a Boys State workshop on 10 December 2016 prior to the Department meeting.  Chairman McElwee requested all Post send their Boys State Chairman’s Name, Address, Phone # and E-mail address to Trenton and to Tommce@comcast.net. Boy’s state orientation will be held on May 1st 2017.  Knelling during the national anthem at Boys and Girls State will not be allowed.
  County Commander’s Project - Mission of Honor – identify and inter orphaned and abandoned cremains of American Veterans; 293 veterans reunited with loved ones so far this year; make decision next month on support levels.
  Burlington County continues to lead other counties in membership.
  1 County candidate so far for Oratorical Contest.
  Next BCEC meeting will be at Post 294 on November 14th at 7PM.
  Southampton School District will recognize American Legion Post 526 when the Employee of the Month selectee is presented their award. The presentation will be held in building #1 on November 14th @ 2000. It would be appreciated to have a few members attend the presentation.

Meeting suspended to introduce Miss Ellie Hood from Cherokee HS. Miss Hood  attended Girl State 2016 and was elected to the position Lt. Governor. Miss Hood gave a recap of her experience. Resumed meeting

  Social: Our Christmas dinner will be held at the Medford Country Club. New Business SAL: Mike Ryan has been working on replacing Sons of the American Legion (SAL) checking account authority to replace that of Tom Viscuso, who has moved to Connecticut, since Mike has replaced Tom as SAL Liaison. A motion was made by Jim Kollasch and seconded by Mark Preston to give Mike Ryan the checking account authority previously held by Tom Viscuso. The motion was voted upon and approved unanimously.
  Correspondence: the post received many flyers from state.  The flyers were for contests, scholarships, scouts, and financial help. Commander Herbst will look into posting flyers online, for wide distribution of information.
  Boys and Girls State for 2017 will have a kick off meeting December 10th .
  Girls State: Commander Herbst sent a letter to state director of Girls State. His letter stated we have 1/3 student population, and would like reconsideration for our spots allotted for Girl State participants. No response as of yet.
  Oratorical Contest: Three schools have expressed interest in participating in the oratorical contest, BCIT, Shawnee, and Cherokee.
  Exploring Ladies Auxiliary: Looking into restarting a local Ladies Auxiliary chapter. Possibly solicit at Christmas party
  A Toys for Tots drive will be held at the Marine Corps League 11/19/16
  NJ State Senate passed a bill mandating the U.S. Flag be present at all public meetings. Also, each meeting will start with the Pledge of Allegiance.
  Mike Ryan has been looking into getting the post a gaming license

  Report on December 22 social: Social was acknowledged as a success. Miss Ellie Hood was acknowledged for her participation, as well being motivation to form a Legion Auxiliary

  Department commander visitation- Roger Gengara and his Project coordinator described their Project, $6500 to Vets South for new Gazebo and furniture, $16,500 for computers, desks, chairs etc. for Vets South and $98,000 for full-time psychiatric worker for Hope for Veterans associated with Vets North, 2 vans for picking up families around the state for 18 month program, already raised $80,000, Post 526 gave $100 as did nine other county Posts/Squadrons, one gave $50 and Post 11 gave over $5K; There will be Eagle Scout ceremonies in both Medford and Marlton this month (Motion for $25 checks for each); Can now preregister to be buried in National Cemetery; Anybody know of WWI monuments in our area for monument grant?

  b) Membership: Post 526 had 144 paid members, and Burlington County was at 94.77% paid membership as of 1/31/17 - Vice Commander Hicks
  c) Report on State Commanders project “Hope for Veterans”: 526 has donated $100.00, Burlington County has sent in $2,050.00. It is noted that Mercer County has contributed $10,150.00.
 

d) Boys and Girls State: BCIT and Lenape High School are complete. Jim Kollasch, Mark Preston, Manish Karnik, Dave Ballinger, and Terry Bothel conducted 19 interviews with students from BCIT and Lenape High School. One boy out of three, and one girl out of six were selected from BCIT as primary delegates. The other two boys were notified of their alternate status and advised on the requirements for their attendance at the convention.

The Pemberton post selected another girl from BCIT, with the caveat she has a sponsor. She was rated 6 out of 6 by our team and Pemberton will provided sponsorship because she is from their area.
The interviews at Shawnee will take place on Thursday February 23rd.
The interviews at Cherokee will take place on Friday February 24th.
The interviews at Cherokee will take place on Friday March 3th. 

New Business a) Boys and Girls State: As of right now, BCIT will sponsor on girl and one boy. We currently have a commitment from Post 526 members to sponsor five boys and two girls. We currently are still seeking sponsors from outside business’s. The post committed to sponsoring six boys and six girls, either through post members, outside sponsors, or the post itself.
  b) The Post voted to pay the Girl State delegates application fees, $50 a piece $300 total.
  c) Correspondence: the post received many flyers from state, flyers were for contest, scholarships, scouts, and financial help. Many of the fliers received are posted here http://njamericanlegion.org/   on the Department of NJ website.
  d) Annual County Testimonial Dinner on March 11th, Noon, O’Connors, $40/person, Reservations by Feb 27, Basket of cheer raffle ($1 or 6 for $5), asking 2 bottles each Post
  e) Post 152 Newark was destroyed by fire and has established a go fund me site.
  f) Still looking into restarting a local Ladies Auxiliary chapter.
  g) Oratorical contest – One contestant from Burlington County spoke Friday February 10th at Post 146 Riverside.
  h) New NJ Tax Law - $3,000 deduction for veterans as part of gas tax for 2017 taxes. More information on rules to follow. Still looking to clarify term “Veteran”
  i) Dave Ballinger mentioned a young man looking for “assistance/ guidance” working on his Eagle Scout project. The young man would need the help from the American Legion Post in a financial assistance and/ or soliciting funds.
  j) Start thinking about Memorial Day parade.
  k) The Red Lion Inn will sponsor Post 526 March 29th and March 30th. From 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm the Post will receive 15% of all sales excluding Alcoholic beverages. A 50/50 raffle will be held nightly to do not need to be present to win.

  b) Correspondence:
The 2017 Parade Float theme for the convention will be “Honoring Women in Uniform.”
  Please submit to names of any Post members that have passed away this year April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2017 so their names can be inscribed on the Memorial pages of the 99th Annual Convention Program Book.
  We received a “Annual Post Hospital Activity Report” Our post will send the number of activities and monetary donations we participated in for our states VA Hospitals, Homes and other facilities.
  The Post Officer’s will be submitting the annual Consolidated Post Report. The data collected in the Post Report can be used by the National Commander when speaking on behalf of all veterans to congress

a)      Still looking into restarting a local Ladies Auxiliary chapter. Will look at inviting Ladies Auxiliary State Commander Mary Schafele speak to any potential interested ladies.

 

a)      The Red Lion Inn will sponsor Post 526 March 29th and March 30th. From 3:00pm to 9:00pm the Post will receive 15% of all sales excluding Alcoholic beverages. A 50/50 raffle will be held nightly to do not need to be present to win.

New Business a) The Post hosted guest Andrew Ballinger, a young man looking for “assistance/ guidance” working on his Eagle Scout project. We have decided assist the young man as a non-for profit as well as any assistance we would be able to offer.
  b) Boys and Girls State: Please see attached report provided by Terry Bothel.
c) Post Commander spoke with Mary Schafele about looking at getting more spots for Girl state.
d) The Post will create an email for general correspondence.
e) The Post has decided not to raise our dues. They will remain at $40.
f) Annual County Testimonial Dinner on March 11th, Noon, O’Connors, about 50-60 attendees. A briefing was given by the “New Jersey’s Mission of Honor for Cremains of American Veterans.”
g) The Post voted to donate $200 New Jersey’s Mission of Honor for Cremains of American Veterans.
h) There is Camden County Job Fair on April 13th.
i) Looking at June for our Spring Social, possibly at the Bamboo Gardens. Vice Commander Hicks will look into available dates.
j) Post approved Jeffery Hicks to become the State of New Jersey’s Sons of American Legion Detachment Vice Commander.
k) Start thinking about Memorial Day parade.

a)   b) Membership: Post 526 in 2016 had 130 members. As of 4/18/2017 526 had 159    members.

a)   c) Post 526 donated $100.00 to the Department Commanders Project. The Project has raised $29,615.00 across the state. Post 526 donated $300.00 to the County Commander’s project “Mission of Honor for Cremains of American Veterans.”

d) Still looking into restarting a local Ladies Auxiliary chapter. Ladies Auxiliary State Commander Mary Schafele will speak to any potential interested ladies at our June picnic.
e) The Red Lion Inn fundraiser dinner March 29th and March 30th raised $1,000.00.
New Business a) Boys and Girls State: Please see attached report provided by Terry Bothel.
b) Post Commander spoke with Mary Schafele about looking at getting more spots for Girl state.
c) Post 526 picnic is June the 3rd 1200-1700. $25 per person. There will be a lifeguard on duty. We will be joined by the Junior Mechanics.
d) Lenape High School ROTC asked for help funding awards. The awards Ceremony is May 24; over 100 cadets. The two awards are General Military Excellence and Scholastic Excellence. A motion was passed to give money for two awards @ $30 each ($60 total)
e) The Garden Club in Beach Heaven is honoring “The Gold Star Families” by present them monument. They have invited Post 526 to the presentation. They would like for us to post the colors. Meeting at the Beach Heaven Liberty @11:00 am on Wednesday June 14, 2007.
f) Mark Preston will be serving spaghetti dressed in a French maids outfit. At the Medford VFW April, the 30th.
g) Looking for new officers for the upcoming year, next month we will be identifying the slate
h) Start thinking about Memorial Day parade.

• All girls have completed their requirement to attend a Girl State Orientation.
• Terry Bothel will be mailing checks to the Girls State Auxiliary to cover the registration fees for all nine delegates attending Girls State ($450.00)
• Seven out of the ten registration forms for the Boys State delegates attending the convention have been submitted. Waiting on two registration forms from Seneca and one from BCIT.
 

a)      d) The American Legion Post 526 Picnic is Saturday June 3, 2017 @ Bamboo Gardens from 12:00 Noon until 5:00 PM. This is open to all members, their family and friends. Cost is $25.00 per person (kids 3 years and under free), Pay at the door. Please email Vice Commander Hicks with your number of attendees. We need a head count no later than Wednesday May 31, 2017. Location: A Tropical Island Paradise

New Business

a) Boys and Girls State Report provided by Terry Bothel.
  b) Commander Herbst passed along that he attended the BCEC Meeting on May 8th; BCEC Officers installed; Participated in Memorial Service of Post Everlasting honoring our five deceased comrades, Francis Edwards, Gilbert Latierre, Stanley Leonberg, Thomas Omara, and Anthony Raymond; Post 526 received 100% flag honor ribbon for 2017; Post 39 (Roebling) Oratorical candidate won an oratorical scholarship and another Post 39 student won the Coloring contest at the Department level; Allan Danley encouraged posts to assign delegates for Legion Convention to support Phil Wein candidacy; Due to BCEC memberships, Burlington is second in parade and in convention seating.
  c) Beware the false “800-606-8198” VA Veterans Choice Program phone line which is set up to steal credit card information; The correct number is 866-606-8198. The Veterans Choice Program has been extended until January 2018.

  f) VFW Post 7677 is scheduling a meeting on July 10th at 6PM to discuss how the various veteran groups can better coordinate their efforts to support veteran and other community projects; I have indicated that our Post would attend.
  g) Looking for new officers for the upcoming year, the Commander’s spot is available!
  h) Volunteers will meet at the Grange Hall Saturday May 27th @ 10:00 am to plant the geraniums on the veteran’s graves. We may be putting the American flags in the markers as well. Haven’t received the final work on the flags yet. We will be planting geraniums at the Vincentown Grange Hall, Ball Field, Baptist Cemetery, and the Methodist cemetery. We usually meet at the Red Lion Dinner @ 8:30 for breakfast before starting everyone is welcome to join us there.
  i) Volunteers will meet Monday morning @ 7:00 am at the Vincentown Ball Field for payer, taps and 21-gun salute. This same activity will occur at Baptist Cemetery, Methodist cemetery and finish at the Vincentown Grange Hall. The presentation at the Grange will start at 9:15 am. After the presentation at the grange, we will all walk down to Budtown road to line up for the parade. If you can’t participate in the morning activities but would like to march in the parade, the dress is white short sleeve shirt, dark or gray slacks and American Legion Cap or veteran cap will work too. Be at Budtown Road & Main Street before 9:30 am because main street will be closed after that. If anybody’s interested in being in the honor guard, we may need a couple. We are planning on carrying the American flag, Legion Post flag, NJ flag & POW flag if we have enough at both the morning activities and during the parade.

New Business Boys and Girls State: Boys and Girls State Update 6/20/2017
Current Status:
Girls State: The convention commenced this past Sunday, 6/18/17, at Georgian Court University, Lakewood, NJ, and all nine of our delegates are attending.
Boys State: The convention commenced this past Sunday, 6/18/17, at Rider University, Lawrence, NJ, and all ten of our delegates are attending.

  a) Post 526 received an award at the 2017 State Convention. Our post was commended on attaining a membership greater than 110%. It was presented by Ed Baldinger.
b) Commander Warren Herbst offered to maintain and pay the $100 fee for the Post 526 web site
  c) Election of Officers took place results are as follows: Frank Hicks-Commander,  Rodrick Melvin-Vice Commander, All other officers maintained current duties.
  d) Carranza Memorial Service 7/8/17
  e) Jeffery Hicks received a unanimous vote to receive Post 526 support in running for SAL State Commander.
  f) Planning a fundraiser dinner at Red Lion Inn in October 2017
  g) As a State, County, Municipal, Fire Fighter, Teacher, Teacher. You are allowed to claim convention leave in lieu regular time off for any American Legion convention.
